Discovering the Tuscan Village.
Legoli is a small hilltop village that is part of the municipality of Peccioli. Its hills provide a temperate and often cool climate thanks to the breezes that sweep through the area: this is the ideal place to escape the chaos of city traffic and enjoy a more serene and relaxed life.

Journey into the Past: The History of Legoli
In Emanuele Repetti's Dictionary, written in 1839 by the Tuscan geographer Emanuele Repetti, Legoli is described as an ancient castle located in the area of the province of Pisa, situated on a tuff hill at the foot of the Carfalo stream. The river flows along its eastern and northern slopes, separating Legoli from two other nearby locations: Toiano and Montefoscoli.
In Legoli, there is an ancient parish church with a baptismal font dedicated to Saints Bartholomew and Justus.

THE LANDFILL
"When the place where the past is deposited becomes a canvas for the art of the present."

At the foot of the picturesque Legoli hill, at a discreet distance from our charming rental retreat, there is a modern waste treatment and storage facility, carefully concealed and integrated into the surrounding landscape. Its presence, distant and well-managed, ensures a serene and harmonious environment for our guests, without any inconvenience to the beauty of our property. The company Belvedere S.p.A. was established in 1997 to address a critical environmental issue related to an unmanaged landfill in the Legoli district. This landfill was the disposal site for the waste from six municipalities in the area. Over the years, Belvedere Spa has grown to become a leading organization in the design, innovation, and development of the territory. Today, it collaborates closely with the Municipality of Peccioli and the Peccioli Foundation to promote progress and sustainability in the area. The project related to the landfill not only aimed to minimize the facility's impact on the surrounding area but also completely transformed the area, which was renamed in a more friendly way as the 'Green Triangle.' In order to enhance the territory, two open-air theaters were indeed built: l'anfiteatro Fonte Mazzola, with a design reminiscent of the ancient Greek theater and a capacity for two thousand spectators, and l'Anfiteatro Triangolo Verde, located within the area previously used as a landfill. This second amphitheater was constructed using eco-friendly materials and following the most advanced bio-construction practices, ensuring the utmost respect for the surrounding environment. This space was designated for concerts and permanent artistic installations. The Peccioli landfill has become a genuine open-air art gallery, featuring several intriguing artworks. British artist David Tremlett transformed the containment walls of the landfill into colorful geometric shapes. Additionally, the company Naturaliter created four large sculptures depicting human figures emerging from the ground, with heights ranging from 5 to 9 meters. These 'presences' convey an important message: from waste, a new life can emerge.

I GABBIANI
In 2010, the artist Raffaello Mauro Marcucci created a series of sculptures called 'Seagulls' for the Legoli Waste Disposal and Treatment Plant. The sculptures depict three seagulls in a sequence of movements representing the beginning of their flight. In the first image, the seagulls are in their initial position, in the second image, they begin to move, while in the third image, the wings are fully open, and the flight begins. The supporting structure of these sculptures was made using rigid drawn copper tubes, onto which the segments of the seagulls' wings and bodies were mounted. The surface of the wings, simulating feathers, was created using copper that was baked and shaped. The baking was necessary both to give the material the required flexibility and to achieve the desired color effects.
LE MARGHERITE DI STAINO
In 2015, a new Mechanical Biological Treatment (T.M.B.) plant was inaugurated at the Legoli Waste Disposal Plant. In 2016, artists Sergio Staino and his son Michele created a colorful mural on ten panels, covering a total length of one hundred meters, decorating the external walls surrounding the T.M.B. This work of art depicts whimsical and affectionate characters, including cicadas, lizards, snails, beetles, turtles, and other small creatures living 'at the height of daisies,' i.e., in the surrounding nature. The mural tells a kind of fable, with princesses, vain soldiers, brave knights, acrobats, and musicians, creating a colorful and lively environment. This work is inspired by the phrase of the photographer Mario Dondero, 'living at the height of daisies,' which symbolizes the life of small beings in the surrounding nature, including the daisy flowers in the meadow that surrounds the plant. The artwork by Sergio and Michele Staino adds beauty and joy to an industrial environment, celebrating life and nature even in unconventional settings.

QUATTRO UOMINI MUTI
In 2006, Legoli also became a center for contemporary art installations, thanks to the work of artist Vittorio Messina titled 'Quattro uomini muti' (Four Silent Men). This artwork consists of four imposing silhouettes of men made from tufa bricks, with only the outlines and the wall. Each of these figures carries an iron easel-like structure on their head. The inspiration for this artwork comes from a story by Pliny the Elder. The daughter of a potter was deeply in love with a young Athenian man who was called to arms to defend the homeland. At the moment of farewell, the young woman realized that the sun cast the shadow of her beloved on a wall. She decided to trace the outline of the shadow to preserve a memory, and from this gesture, according to legend, both painting and sculpture as art forms were born.
PRESENZE
The artistic installation titled 'Presences,' created in 2011, consists of four sculptures made from expanded polystyrene and polyurethane foam, covered with external-resistant cement fiber. These sculptures were placed in various locations, including the Green Triangle within the Legoli waste disposal and treatment plant, the Fonte Mazzola Amphitheater, and above the roof of the Business Incubator in the 'La Fila' area. This project aims to convey the idea that from waste management and the rebirth of materials, new life can emerge. They not only symbolize the possibility of renewal but also the ability to transform places that might otherwise be considered degraded or valueless into meaningful and evocative spaces. The fusion of art and landscape has proven successful on multiple occasions. A notable example occurred in the summer of 2013 when two of the four sculptures called 'Presences' were transported by helicopter from the Green Triangle in Legoli to the Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico. This theater is known for being the venue where Andrea Bocelli holds an annual internationally renowned concert that attracts audiences from around the world. In 2018, the Legoli plant hosted the start of the first edition of the Eco Run, which took its name from these very installations and became famous as 'The Night of Giants.' This event demonstrated how art and nature can converge into a unique experience. For those interested in visiting these sculptures, it is possible to do so in the waste treatment and disposal plant area. Simply book a visit by calling or filling out the form on the belvedere.peccioli.net website. This provides the opportunity to discover up close the combination of art and the environment in an extraordinary context.

For about 30 years, in the village of Legoli, a traditional end-of-summer event has been held to celebrate the patron Saint Bartholomew. This festival lasts for four days and offers a variety of attractions, including food stalls, children's games, live music, and a tourist ride on Motovespa called 'Encounter in Valdera,' which usually takes place on Sundays. The final day, Monday, hosts the annual village fair.

On the third weekend of December, Legoli prepares to celebrate Christmas, following an annual tradition. Saturday offers the opportunity to visit the nativity scenes along the streets of the village and conclude the day with a delightful dinner. Furthermore, in the charming Church of Madonna delle Grazie, the Valdera Choir performs a Christmas concert to create a festive atmosphere. Sunday, on the other hand, is dedicated to the traditional Living Nativity, a unique experience that takes place through the streets of the village from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Legoli has a longstanding collaboration with the Terre di Presepi association, and its Living Nativity represents a significant stop in the journey of the pilgrim nativity enthusiast. All of this makes the event a wonderful way to immerse oneself in the Christmas atmosphere and share the joy of the holidays with the local community.

Honey, Wax, and Soaps

In the hilly areas of Legoli, Fabbrica, and Montelopio, organic apicultural products are made, including wildflower honey and acacia honey, as well as bee-derived products like organic beeswax and propolis. Additionally, soaps are crafted using beeswax and olive oil, or flavored with ingredients such as mint, sage, and mallow. All of this represents a range of natural and organic products related to beekeeping and the use of beeswax.
